Case Management Ethics 2018: Where Should Your Ethical Compass Point?

September 13, 2018

Please join us for our September Chapter meeting

Our topic will be Case Management Ethics 2018: Where Should Your Ethical Compass Point?

Presented by Ellen Fink-Samnick MSW, ACSW, LCSW, CCM CRP Principal, EFS Supervision Strategies, LLC

Ellen Fink-Samnick empowers health care's transdisciplinary workforce thru professional speaking, mentoring, and consultation. An award winning, industry thought leader for over 30 years, Ellen is known and respected as 'The Ethical Compass of Professional Case Management'. She is a popular presenter with hundreds of offerings to her credit and the author of over 100 publications.

Ellen has written content for the industry's top knowledge products for professional case managers and social workers including books, chapters and educational modules on ethical practice, the ethical use of technology, competency-based case management practice models, and Wholistic Case Management®. Her recent work on the various dimensions of both the social determinants of health plus workplace bullying and violence has achieved international and interprofessional acclaim. She is a frequent contributor to ICD 10 Monitor and Talk Ten Tuesday, the American Medical Association's Integrated Health Model Initiative Collaboration Ecosystem and was recently named a member of the Advisory Board for Reverberation 5.0 (a national collective focused on the empowerment of women over 50 in the workplace).

Ellen's passion is evident across her varied roles as professional speaker, industry consultant and subject matter expert, educator, blogger and social media moderator, continuing education content developer, accreditation specialist, clinical social work supervisor and professional mentor to the case management community.

Her contributions to professional case management, ethics, and clinical social work transverse the industry’s professional associations and credentialing organizations; including roles as exam item writer, and countless leadership positions. In addition, Ellen serves on the Editorial Advisory Board for the Professional Case Management Journal and is moderator of Ellen’s Ethical Lens™ on LinkedIn. She is a vibrant professional voice.

Abstract: A new era of health care realities transverse the ethical tenets of Case Management practice:

Death with dignity and other revised considerations for end of life care

Quality and safety implications of workplace bullying

Managing the Social Determinants of Health

Ongoing proficiency with evolving health information technology and regulations

Each of these situations causes case managers to regularly juggle the Moral Distress balls of personal, clinical and

organizational ethics. As a result, the question beckons: What is a case manager’s ethical duty when employer

mandates present as counter to the established professional standards, ethical codes, and regulations? Where

should and does your ethical compass point?

Blending real industry scenarios with the latest professional resources, this presentation will provide case managers

strategic guidance to define their ethical practice trajectory.

Behavioral Objectives:

1. Identify case management’s latest Ethical Quartet for 2018

2. Identify how case management’s ethical tenets are impacted by current practice

3. Discuss how Moral Distress impacts case management practice

4. Define and apply the steps of E-ACTS©-A Framework for Difficult Ethical Decision-Making
